The Gearing class served for three and a half decades as a primary arm of the fleet.

JOHNSTON was laid down by Consolidated Steel, Orange Texas June 5, 1945.
Launched October 19, 1945; Commissioned August 23, 1946.
Decommissioned in Philadelphia, PA and stricken October 1, 1980

Transferred to Taiwan February 27, 1981
Renamed Chen Yang DD928

Reclassified Guided Missile Destroyer DDG-928
Decommissioned on December 16, 2003
Sunk as a target July 20, 2006
